POLICY ON EXTENDING THE PROBATIONARY PERIOD FOR TENURE
Draft:11/12/2003
A faculty member may request that her/his probationary period for
tenure be extended, according to the rules listed below. This policy recognizes the effects that child
bearing/rearing issues, family care responsibilities, and serious medical
illness may have on the energy that a faculty member can devote to her/his
professional responsibilities and, thus, on the ability to work at the pace or
level expected to achieve tenure.
- Requests are
made by the faculty member to the AVP through the appropriate Dean.
- Requests for
the Extension of the Probationary Period for tenure will normally be
submitted to meet the following deadlines:
- If the
normal tenure decision will be made in a Fall Semester, any request for
extension must normally be made prior to the previous January 15.
- If the
normal tenure decision will be made in a Spring Semester, any request for
extension must normally be made prior to the previous May 15.
- In the event
of exceptional circumstances, exceptions to these deadlines should be
granted
- The
probationary period may be extended in one-year increments up to a maximum
of two years.
- An extension
of one year for the birth/adoption of a child is automatic for either
parent upon request. Two or more
children adopted simultaneously or within a one-year period will count as
one for the purposes of this policy.
- A faculty
member who has been granted a Reduction in Duties for Family Care will be
granted an extension of one year automatically upon request. For faculty members who have not
received a Reduction in Duties for Family Care, requests for extensions of
the probationary period for family care reasons should be judged using the
most liberal interpretation of the need for such an extension.
- If a faculty
member has suffered a serious illness and been granted a leave for
temporary disability as a result, an extension of one year will be granted
automatically upon request.
- An extension
of the probationary period for tenure should not penalize the faculty
member in the tenure review process.
